Cornish GPs become first to launch park run event

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 7:00am 4th January 2020. (Updated at 10:07am 4th January 2020)

A group of GP surgeries in Cornwall have become the first practices in the country to set up a park run event.

The Land's End park run officially launches at 9am on Saturday 4th January.

The Royal College of General Practitioners has been encouraging people to take part to help get active, which inspired the Alverton practice in Penzance.

In fact all eight GP surgeries in the Penwith area have now collaborated to launch a new park run for west Cornwall - in Land's End.

The idea stemmed from an event held in Helston around a year ago and the group of around 50 GPs decided to launch their own.

The event will be officially started by Cornish Olympian Helen Glover.

"It's a fantastic opportunity to encourage people to take on exercise, for their mental and psychical wellbeing.

"So we can recommend our patients who might be suitable to go and get involved, either to take part or volunteer.

"If you're lonely and isolated it's nice thing to go and get involved with.

"It's a community feel and it's very welcoming."

Dr Matthew Boulton, Alverton Practice

Doctors say the launch is great timing in helping people get fit and healthy for the new year.

"They are great on so many levels, it really is open to absolutely anybody, all shapes, all sizes, all abilities.

"Children can register from the age of four.

"It is fine to walk, jog, a bit of both, and it's completely free to take part.

"It's a weekly event and you can track your progress and it's a very social event."

Dr Sandra Treleven, Alverton Practice

The Land's End park run takes place every Saturday at 9am, starting at the Land's End attraction, and is completely free.

You can register to take part here.
