Burst water main shuts busy main road in St Austell

Published by the Pirate FM News Team at 8:56am 6th January 2020. (Updated at 6:16pm 6th January 2020)

A burst water main has turned part of a main road through St Austell into a river.

The torrents could be seen streaming down through the garden of a house in the Treverbyn Road area.

A listener has told Pirate FM part of a wall has collapsed, sending debris spilling across the carriageway.

Stuart Reeves says a chunk hit his van after he stopped during the school run on Monday morning.

Traffic and travel service, Inrix, confirmed a stretch of the road was closed for emergency repairs.

Pirate FM understands that the road has now been re-opened but there is still slow traffic in the area.

Stuart, who runs SCR Landscapes in St Austell, carries massive water pumps for his business and is offering to help.

"I was just taking my daughter to school at Mount Charles when it happened.

"It looks like the water is coming from behind the property, through their house and garden; the whole garden is like a lake.

"I had parked my van on the kerb when part of the wall came down and hit a car and my van.

"There is debris around half a mile down the road. It is being washed through the garden and onto the street.

"It's going to make a huge mess. It's terrible".

South West Water has since confirmed that the incident involves a burst pipe in the garden of a property.

They have issued an apology to customers and say they are working to restore supplies in the affected area.

"We are working to repair a burst pipe in the garden of a property in Gribben Close, St Austell, which earlier this morning caused damage to a wall and localised flooding.

"The road is temporarily closed while we make it safe. Emergency services are also on site".
