Photos and video footage have revealed the trail of destruction after a water main burst in St Austell.

The torrents were streaming through a garden on Treverbyn Road, causing part of a wall to collapse.

It sent debris spilling out across the carriageway during the rush-hour and the road was closed in both directions.

Pirate FM understands that the road has now been re-opened but there is still slow traffic in the area.

Passing drivers described the scene as 'terrible' and a 'total mess'.

"Crews are making safe a burst water main which is causing extensive damage.

"There are no reported injuries

"Update: South West Water have isolated the main and we have left the scene. Expect disruption to traffic for some time".

South West Water has since confirmed that the incident involves a burst pipe in the garden of a property.

They have issued an apology to customers and say they are working to restore supplies in the affected area.

"We are working to repair a burst pipe in the garden of a property in Gribben Close, St Austell, which earlier this morning caused damage to a wall and localised flooding.

"The road is temporarily closed while we make it safe. Emergency services are also on site".
