A 'hero' dog from Cornwall has saved his owner's home from a fire.

Richard Sanders' wife was about to jump in the shower when Kako started whining.

Turns out he had smelt the smoke billowing from their burning washing machine.

The family, who live near Port Isaac, did not realise their model was on that Hotpoint and Indesit recall list.

"Anything could've happened - it doesn't bear thinking about"

Scroll down to check the list of machines that could be at risk from a fire and read what to do if yours is affected.

Richard got in touch with Pirate FM because despite Kako's amazing intuition, he wants everyone to double check.

"Donna does often put the washing machine on and we leave the house with it on or on a timer because, you know, you trust your appliances as you do.

"The kids could've been in bed, anything could've happened; it doesn't bear thinking about".

What do I do if my machine is on the 'risk list'?

Hotpoint and Indesit's manufacturer, Whirpool, is urging everyone to check their machines.

Model and serial numbers can be found inside the door and on a label on the rear of the appliance.

"People's safety is Whirlpool's priority, which is why we are proactively recalling certain models of washing machines manufactured under the Hotpoint and Indesit brands between 2014 and 2018.

"To find out more about the recall and to check whether your machine will need to be recalled, you can click the button below or call 0800 316 1442.

"Please note that appliances under the Whirlpool brand are not affected".

If your washing machine is being recalled, you will be able to choose a free, like-for-like replacement or a free in-home repair.
