A stretch of the A30 has been closed just before Launceston after a car fire broke out.

It was first reported at around 8.15pm on Wednesday night.

One lane was closed westbound overnight at Liftondown so accident investigation work could be carried out.

Drivers were being urged to slow down when passing.

"One lane closed due to earlier vehicle fire and accident investigation work on A30 Westbound at A388 (Polson / Lifton Down Turn Off).

"Lane one (of two) is closed, lane has remained closed throughout last night so it can be inspected in daylight."
