Final chance to re-home hens as 600 face the slaughter

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 8:06am 10th January 2020. (Updated at 7:27pm 10th January 2020)

It is your final chance to register to re-home hens as 600 face the slaughter in Cornwall

Re-homing events are being held in Liskeard and Redruth on Sunday 12th January.

Hundreds of ex-commercial birds are hoping to find new homes in the Duchy as much-loved pets.

Once they reach 18 months old, these hens are no longer considered commercially viable and are classed as 'end of lay' so would be sent to slaughter.

The British Hen Welfare Trust is keen to hear from any kind-hearted members of the  public who could collect hens from its rehomings this weekend.

The charity says they make great pets!

How to re-home hens:

To rehome some hens please register your details at www.bhwt.org.uk and then call Hen Central on 01884 860084 to complete your booking.

"We're really hoping to get 2020 off to a fantastic start by finding homes for all 600 hens in Cornwall.

"Not only will you get the feelgood factor from knowing you've saved lives, but you'll also be rewarded with flock of a funny, inquisitive, life-enriching feathered friends to enjoy.

"These hens really do deserve their retirements, so if you've got a bit of space in your back garden, some time to give and space on your plate for an egg or two you can't go far wrong by adopting some ex-bats."

Gaynor Davies, Head of Operations at the BHWT
