Firefighters have spent the early hours battling a house fire in Penzance.

Crews from the town and Hayle were scrambled to Dominic Street just after 12.30am.

They discovered the blaze was out but confirmed four people were treated for breathing in smoke.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service posted the details on their website, alongside a warning about smoke alarms.

"At 00.32 Critical Control received a call to a house fire.

"Two appliances from Penzance Community Fire Station were mobilised to the incident with an officer and also supported by Hayle Emergency Services Community Station.

"On arrival, the first crew in attendance found there had been a small fire which had been extinguished.

"The other appliances were returned to their home stations to provide further fire cover if required.

"Ambulance were requested as four persons were suffering smoke inhalation and are now in the care of South West Ambulance Service".

What is the advice from Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service?

The easiest way to protect your home and family from fire is with a working smoke alarm.

  • Fit at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home, they are available from DIY stores, electrical shops and most high street supermarkets.
  • The ideal position for a smoke alarm is on the ceiling, in the middle of a room, and on the hallway and landing, so you can hear an alarm throughout your home.
  • Only take the battery out when you need to replace it
  • You can even have linked alarms installed, so that when one alarm detects a fire they all go off together.
  • If you have a ten year alarm, or a mains connected alarm, they will need to be replaced every ten years. This date can usually be found on the alarm.
  • Avoid putting alarms in or near kitchens or bathrooms where smoke or steam can set them off by accident.
  • Never disconnect or take the batteries out of your alarm if it goes off by mistake.
  • Strobe lighting and vibrating pad smoke alarms are available for the deaf or hard of hearing
