Safety warning after cliff collapse on north coast

Safety warning after cliff collapse on north coast

Published by Emma Carton at 11:44am 17th January 2020. (Updated at 1:32pm 17th January 2020)

There are fears a stretch of the Cornish coast, already affected by a cliff collapse, could be vulnerable after Storm Brendan.

Cracks first appeared in the rock at Watergate Bay back in November, before a chunk crumbled away completely.

Now fresh photos show the extent of the damage on the edge of the South West Coast Path.

Off-duty lifeguard Theresa Morkutti shared these photos as a warning, at the end of a week that saw the Duchy battered by heavy rain and gales of over 75mph.

What is the safety advice from the Coastguard?

Coastguards regularly issue advice about the fragility of Cornwall's coastline during storms.

Officials say the main message is to steer clear of the edge, as chunks can collapse with very little warning:

  • Stay well back from the edge
  • Keep an eye on children and dogs to make sure they do the same
  • Make sure you are properly equipped for walking along coastal paths
  • Wear sturdy shoes or boots
  • Obey any warning signs and don't climb fences to get to the edge of the cliff
  • Don’t attempt to climb up or down cliffs unless you are properly equipped and trained to do so
  • Don't attempt to climb cliffs as a short cut back to the top
  • Be responsible and don't take unnecessary risks or let other people in your group do so.
