That Met Office cold weather alert for Cornwall kicks in on Sunday and it is set to last for 48hrs.

The yellow, or Level Two, alert has been issued for the whole of the south-west until 6pm on Tuesday.

Forecasters were predicting overnight lows of -3C in some parts of the region.

The gritters were sent out twice on Saturday night, with road temperatures set to drop to as low as -4.6C.

They are set to go back out on Sunday and you can check which routes will be salted and when here.

What is a cold weather alert and what does it mean?

The cold weather health watch comprises five levels of response based on cold weather thresholds.

The thresholds have been developed to trigger an alert when severe cold weather is likely to significantly affect people's health.

The alerts take account of temperature along with other winter weather threats such as ice and snow.

The Met Office has issued a yellow, or Level 2, cold weather alert for Cornwall and the south-west.

This means alert and readiness, with forecasters saying there is a 70% chance of icy conditions.

The alert will be in force from 6pm on Sunday until 6pm on Tuesday.

What does the Met Office say?

"There is a 70% probability of severe cold weather/icy conditions/heavy snow between 1800 on Sunday 19th January and 1800 on Tuesday 21st January in parts of England.

"This weather could increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services. Please refer to the national Cold Weather Plan and your Trust's emergency plan for appropriate preventive action.

"High pressure will build across the country over the weekend and into early next week. This will bring a spell of dry weather and light winds, with overnight frosts becoming widespread.

"The cold overnight temperatures will be offset by generally fine daytime conditions with sunny spells. However, fog patches will develop across central and southern areas Sunday night into Monday, suppressing daytime temperatures in places where slow to clear.

"Later Monday and into Tuesday, freezing fog may become more widespread although confidence decreases.

"Some cloudier conditions are also expected to spread southwards and bring less cold conditions, but the speed of this progress is a little uncertain at present".
