Firefighters from across Cornwall and Devon battle blaze near Bude

Firefighters from across Cornwall and Devon are battling a house fire near Bude.

A blaze broke out on the ground floor of a property in Poughill at around 11.40am on Monday.

Crews were working hard to stop the flames from spreading to the first floor of the building.

Teams from Bude, Delabole, Launceston, St Austell and Holsworthy were all called to the scene.

They were using hose reel jets to tackle the blaze and road closures were put in place.

At 1.30pm they confirmed that the fire had been extinguished and an investigation is being carried out into how it started.

"Two fire appliances from Bude are in attendance at a fire in a house, measuring approximately 25 metres by 10 metres. 

"The fire is on the ground floor and firefighters are working hard to prevent the fire spreading to the first floor.

"Two additional pumps have been requested and these are en-route from Delabole and Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service's Holsworthy Fire Station."

Update 12.30pm: "The four pumps are in attendance and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are using hosereel jets to try and prevent the fire from spreading to the first floor. 

"An incident command unit is en-route from Launceston and a breathing apparatus support unit is en-route from St Austell.

"The road between Inches Shop and the Post Office at Poughill has been closed and drivers are requested to avoid the area."

Update 1.30pm: "The fire has been extinguished and the fire crews are making up their kit.

"An investigation into how the fire started has begun."
