Family in shock after 'suspected arson' in Truro

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 1:50pm 22nd January 2020. (Updated at 1:57pm 22nd January 2020)

A mum from Truro says it could have easily been "a very tragic turn of events" after their home caught fire in a suspected 'arson' case.

Sara King says a blaze started in the bins and recycling waste outside her home in Threemilestone.

She and her family were asleep inside when it broke out on Hawthorn Way, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Luckily a neighbour saw the flames and dialled 999.

Sara says when firefighters got the scene they were unable to reach the front door as the flames were too strong - so they had to put the fire out first.

Black smoke had risen up the side of the house and into their eight-month-old son's bedroom. That reportedly left a "noxious haze" on the upper floor.

Thankfully everybody got out safely but the family is now trying to raise awareness and warn others about suspicious activity during the night.

"The firefighters declared it as suspicious, leading to the police arriving, taking a statement and logging it as arson. Forensic officers arrived, gathering further evidence and reconfirmed that it was being investigated as arson.

"The fire was said to be so fierce the rendering was peeling away from the walls, and a couple of minutes away from breaching the downstairs kitchen window which would then quickly have taken the inside of the house. The damage you can see is all - thankfully - external, but this all occurred in a matter of minutes.

"The flames reached above the level of the porch roof, with the heat and smoke thick enough to scorch and blacken the front of the property, up to our 8 month old son's bedroom windows, where smoke had entered into his room via an extractor unit, which succumbed to the heat of the flames, leaving a noxious haze throughout the upper floor and attic.

"It is obvious to state we are deeply shocked by this incident, considering when firefighters and forensics said if there had been a breeze that night it could very easily have been a very tragic turn of events - not just for our own family and home, but the entire row of houses.

"We are incredibly grateful and so so lucky that our neighbour spotted it and called 999 at that exact time. Any longer and it doesn't bare thinking about.

"We are also endlessly thankful to the fire fighters for saving our lives and our home, and for the forensic team, and police officers for their continuing investigations."
