Police warning over fitness apps' security

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 3:31pm 23rd January 2020.

Devon and Cornwall Police have issued a warning about how fitness apps could be telling thieves where you live.

Officers say there has been a spike in thefts of high value bikes from homes.

They believe that the increasing use of fitness apps is telling thieves personal information, such as where victims live and when they leave and return.

They can also track which routes have been taken and the speed to get to and from destinations, which could indicate what kind of bike you're using.

People are being urged to make sure they're using security settings properly.

"There is an increasing trend in theft of high value bikes particularly e-bikes from sheds/garages etc.

"It has come to the police's attention that with the increasing use of fitness apps such a Strava and other apps, thieves are able to monitor where victims live, when they leave and return, times and routes taken.

"Thieves are also able to tell the type of bike from the speed taken to get to and from destinations.

"This gives the thieves an idea of which type of bikes are being used making them easy targets.

"Residents are encouraged to utilise the privacy settings on any fitness apps they use to hide their movements."
