Police update as incident leaves a marine 'critical'

An investigation has been launched after the incident on a Cornish beach that has left a Royal Marine fighting for his life.

The recruit was airlifted to hospital after reportedly going under the water at Tregantle in Whitsand Bay.

Police have confirmed the man remains in a critical condition at Derriford after it happened on Tuesday night.

They are making enquiries, along with the MOD, and say The Marine Accident Investigation Branch has also been informed.

"Police were notified yesterday (Wednesday 22 January), to reports that a serving Royal Marine had been involved in an incident during an exercise on Tregantle beach in Cornwall.

"The Royal Marine was taken to Derriford Hospital in a critical condition where he remains. His next of kin are aware.

"The MOD and police are currently carrying out enquiries into the incident.

"The Maritime Accident Investigation Board have also been advised".
