Cornwall to hold world record attempt for largest cream tea party

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 7:00am 25th January 2020. (Updated at 7:09am 25th January 2020)

Plans have been revealed for a new world record attempt in Cornwall - for the largest cream tea party!

Cornish healthcare charity Cornwall Hospice Care will be holding the event in June.

They are hoping to serve tea to a whopping 1,200 people.

The current record was set in November last year in China when 1,088 people took part.

To ensure success Cornwall Hospice Care are aiming for at least 1,200 people to join them on the day.

"We firmly believe this record should be held in Cornwall, the home of the cream tea.

"To break the record we need at least 1,200 people to sit down at the same time, drinking a cup of tea and eating a jam, scone and cream, jam first of course, at the same time.

"This will be a tea party like no other, so please join us and let's bring this cream tea record home to Cornwall."

Judy Lawton, event coordinator

How does it work?

In order to be counted for the world record attempt participants have to eat one whole scone, with clotted cream and jam, and drink one full cup of tea.

The rules are strict and the charity wants to make history so people are asked to consider this when signing up!

How to get involved:

The event will have a 1940s theme and entertainment will be provided by Company B and the Liberty Sisters with dancing positively encouraged.

40 Cornwall-based businesses are sponsoring the event, along with Boosters of Redruth who are providing all the merchandise, Rodda's all the cream and Tregothnan the tea.

The world record attempt will take place on Saturday 20th June 2020 in the Exhibition Hall at the Royal Cornwall Showground, Wadebridge.

Entry will be by ticket (£10 each) and these will be available from Monday 13th January 2020.
