Detectives leading a murder investigation in Liskeard say they are treating the incident as isolated.

Officers have issued a message of reassurance after the death of a local man in his 20s.

They were called to reports of a serious assault in the Cattle Market car park.

The casualty was rushed to Derriford Hospital but, tragically, he could not be saved.

Cordons remained in place throughout most of Sunday after it happened just before 1am.

Speaking later in the day, the Senior Investigating officer confirmed a 45-year-old local man had been arrested.

"We have, this afternoon, arrested a man on suspicion of murder following the death of a man in the early hours of this morning.

"I'm keen to provide reassurance that this is being treated as an isolated incident.

"This investigation remains in its early stages and I would ask that you avoid speculation whilst enquires are carried out.

"Officers will remain visible in the City Centre area over the coming hours whilst further enquiries are carried out".

Inspector Steve Hambly

As of first thing on Monday morning, the 45-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder remained in custody.

Detectives investigating the incident have urged people not to speculate on social media.

"As the investigation continues I would urge people not to speculate on Social Media.

"The increased officer presence in Liskeard over the next few days is to further enquires.

"Please feel free to approach these officers if you wish to discuss anything".

Inspector Rupert Engley

Anyone who witnessed the incident and anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting log 265 26/1/20.
