Murder inquiry: Police name young man who died

Police leading a murder investigation in south-east Cornwall have named the young man who died.

Officers say 20-year-old Damien Bendelow was found with multiple stab wounds in Liskeard.

They were called to reports of a serious assault in the Cattle Market car park at the weekend.

The casualty was rushed to Derriford Hospital but, tragically, could not be saved.

Detectives have since confirmed that a man in his 40s, who is also from the town, has been charged.

Police had applied for more time to question a suspect, arrested on suspicion of murder.

On Tuesday morning they confirmed that 45-year-old local man, Carl Smythe, has been charged.

"A 45-year-old man has been charged with murder following a serious assault in Liskeard on Sunday 26th January.

"Carl Smythe, aged 45, of Varley Lane, Liskeard, has been charged with the murder of 20-year-old Damien Bendelow, also from Liskeard.

"Smythe is also charged with four counts of common assault.

"Smythe has been remanded in police custody and is due to appear at Truro Magistrates Court today (Tuesday 28 January)".
