Murder charge over a young man's death in Liskeard

Detectives investigating the death of a young man in Liskeard have confirmed a man has been charged with murder.

Police say 20-year-old Damien Bendelow suffered multiple stab wounds.

Officers were scrambled to reports of a serious assault in the Cattle Market car park.

The casualty was rushed to Derriford in the early hours of Sunday but could not be saved.

A local man in his 40s was arrested on suspicion of murder later that day and has since been charged.

"A 45-year-old man has been charged with murder following a serious assault in Liskeard on Sunday 26th January.

"Carl Smythe, aged 45, of Varley Lane, Liskeard, has been charged with the murder of 20-year-old Damien Bendelow, also from Liskeard.

"Smythe is also charged with four counts of common assault.

"Smythe has been remanded in police custody and is due to appear at Truro Magistrates Court today (Tuesday 28 January)".

Devon and Cornwall Police

45-year-old Carl Smythe appeared at Truro Magistrates Court on Tuesday morning.

The case was referred to Truro Crown Court that afternoon, where Smythe was remanded in custody.

He is now due back at Crown Court for a plea hearing on the 20th February.
