A Royal Marine recruit who died after an incident during training on a Cornish beach has been named.

Ethan Jones was airlifted to Derriford following the exercise at Tregantle in Whitsand Bay last week.

The casualty got into difficulty and had reportedly 'gone under water'.

Police and paramedics were scrambled to the scene on the 21st January.

Ethan was rushed to hospital a critical condition but, tragically, could not be saved. He died four days later.

“Ethan died fulfilling his dream and doing something he loved.

"Joining the Royal Marines was something Ethan had wanted to do for as long as we can remember.

"He wanted to join the best of the best and challenge himself.

"Ethan loved the outdoor lifestyle and was looking forward to serving as a Marine on operations around the world.

"We are very proud of all that he achieved.”

Ethan was described as an outdoorsman looking for adventure and the opportunity to serve his country.

He had joined the Royal Marines on 27th May 2019, to start 32 weeks of what is amongst the most arduous military training anywhere in the world.

The Royal Navy has released the following statement, and is asking that his family's privacy is respected at this time.

“We can confirm the Royal Marine who was injured in an incident two weeks ago and later died was Royal Marine Recruit Ethan Jones.

“The thoughts and sympathies of the Naval Service are with the family and friends of Recruit Jones.

“The incident is still under investigation, therefore it would be inappropriate to comment further.”
