EU flag to be lowered in Truro

It is Brexit Day and Cornwall Council has revealed that it will be removing the EU flag which flies outside New County Hall in Truro.

The three flagpoles outside the council headquarters usually fly the Cornish flag, the Union flag and the EU flag.

But with the UK set to leave the EU at 11pm tonight the council has confirmed that the distinctive blue flag with ring of gold stars will be removed.

In its place the council is set to raise a Cornwall Council flag.

However the council is not discarding of its EU flag and said that it will continue to be flown on occasions to mark Cornwall’s ties with Europe.

"After January 31st, the flagpole that is currently in use for the EU flag will instead fly a Cornwall Council flag.

"Going forward, the Council of Europe flag will be flown on specific occasions at the Chairman’s discretion as a mark of our continued ties with that body."

Cornwall Council statement

The flagpoles have occasionally been used for different flags including an English flag last summer during the FIFA World Cup to show support for the England team during the finals.

Cornwall Council has also flown the LGBT rainbow flag in support of Cornwall Pride.

In 2018 an online petition was launched calling for the council to replace the European flag with a Pan-Celtic flag after Brexit. To date it has received 329 signatures.
