Severe weather warning for gales out for Cornwall

Published by Emma Carton at 10:56am 4th February 2020. (Updated at 10:58am 4th February 2020)

The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning for Cornwall, for gales of up to 80mph.

Strong winds are set to batter the coast over the weekend, with the risk of big waves.

Travel disruption could be on the cards, including the possible closure of roads and bridges.

Forecasters say the gusts could bring down trees, roof tiles and even spark power cuts as well.

The yellow alert will be out from Saturday night and all day Sunday, with the risk of heavy rain too.

What can we expect?

The Met Office warning for strong winds will be in force from 6pm on Saturday until 23.59am on Sunday.

  • Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport expected
  • Coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities affected by spray and/or large waves
  • There is a small chance that some roads and bridges could close
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
  • There is a slight chance of some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs

What is the forecast?

"Very strong winds are likely across much of the UK later Saturday and through Sunday.

"Gusts of 50 to 60mph are likely across many inland areas, with gusts 70, possibly 80mph, around some exposed coasts and hills, especially in the north and west.

"Heavy rain will be an additional hazard, especially over western hills.

"Winds of this strength across a wide area have the potential to produce disruption to transport, along with some coastal impacts, especially in the west".
