The Met Office has updated its weather warning for Cornwall as Storm Ciara looms, saying it could now pose a 'danger to life'.

The yellow alert for gales of up to 80mph had been issued for Saturday evening and all day on Sunday.

That will now be in force from midnight until 11.59pm on Sunday.

However forecasters say the gusts could whip up huge waves on the coast and trigger flying debris, which could put lives at risk.

What can we expect?

Storm Ciara is expected to bring gales of up to 80mph in parts of the UK, alongside heavy rain.

Forecasters say we can expect:

  • Injuries and danger to life from flying debris are possible
  • Injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties
  • Some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs, could happen
  • Road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected, with longer journey times and cancellations possible
  • Some roads and bridges may close
  • Power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage

The weather warning for strong winds will be in force from 00.00am on Sunday until 23.59pm on Sunday.

You can track the storm's progress below...

What is the forecast?

"Strong winds will be widespread and last throughout much of Sunday.

"Gusts of 50 to 60mph are likely across many inland areas and around 70mph in coastal areas.

"There is a small chance of even stronger winds across parts of Scotland, potentially 70 to 80mph. However, it is currently very uncertain whether the wind will reach this strength here and when this will occur.

"A spell of heavy rain will also affect many regions for a time, making driving conditions particularly poor".
