Phillip Schofield has described the moment he travelled to Cornwall to tell his mum he's gay.

The TV presenter, who grew up in Newquay, says she replied 'I don't care'.

Phil revealed the news on Instagram before this emotional interview on This Morning with co-host Holly.

He told her he had been inspired by the "brave" guests who have appeared on the show and thought: "I have to be that person."

Speaking about how his mum Pat reacted, Phil said:

"It was the same with my mum, my mum is watching this today. She’s been on the phone this morning – hope you’re OK.

"I went down to see her, she’s down in Cornwall, and I went down to see her. And I told her and she said 'oh, OK, well, I don't care' - and that's the same with everyone."

He has also praised the support of wife of 27 years Steph, calling her "astonishing" and saying he has "never had any secrets" from her.

Phillip insists he wasn't forced to come out, adding "this is something I knew I had to do".

Messages of support have been flooding in from fellow celebrities.

Holly Willoughby, his co-presenter on This Morning posted on Instagram that she has "never been more proud of my friend than I am today".

ITV stars Ant and Dec tweeted: "Huge respect and admiration for our friend @Schofe Sending love to you P, and to your 3 lovely girls."

Writing on Instagram, actor John Barrowman said: "So proud of you and your family Phillip. Welcome to your truth and authentic self. The nation loves you for who you because you are @schofe

"Can't wait to hug you and don't worry we got your back we are #LGBTQ+strong..."

Fellow TV host Dermot O'Leary also sent his support to Schofield on Twitter, writing: "Sending big love to the Schofield and his family, @Schofe Stand up guy, heart of a lion. X"

Others offered their support with actor and comedian David Walliams tweeting: "I am sending all my love to Phillip Schofield today.

"I have always held him in the highest regard, and now have nothing but respect and admiration for him.

"Let's hope we are moving towards a world where no-one has to come out anymore, they can just be who they are and celebrate that."

In part of Phillip's statement, he said:

"My inner conflict contrasts with an outside world that has changed so very much for the better.

"Today, quite rightly, being gay is a reason to celebrate and be proud."
