Cornwall on flood watch as Storm Ciara looms

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 8:45am 8th February 2020. (Updated at 3:48pm 8th February 2020)

A string of flood alerts have gone out for nearly all of the Cornish coast as Storm Ciara looms.

It is forecast to be the most severe weather system to hit the UK since 2013.

80mph gales and giant waves are set to hit on Sunday.

A yellow weather warning is in force for the whole day with the Met Office saying it could pose a 'danger to life'.

An amber weather warning has also been issued alongside that, between 8am and 9pm.

Forecasters say the gusts could whip up huge waves on the coast and trigger flying debris, which could put lives at risk.

The Environment Agency has issues flood alerts for the following areas:

  • The Rumps to Hartland Point excluding Bude
  • Chapel Porth to The Rumps excluding the tidal River Camel
  • Lands End to Chapel Porth
  • Rame Head to Plymouth including tidal estuaries
  • Gribbin Head to Rame Head
  • Lizard Point to Gribbin Head excluding Truro City
  • Lands End to Lizard Point
  • Tidal River Camel excluding Wadebridge and Chapel Amble

"Flooding is possible for all high tides from the morning of Sunday 9th February until the morning of Tuesday 11th February.

"Times of high water will vary along the coast.

"Tide levels are now rising towards spring tides which peak on Wednesday 12th February.

"High tide levels, along with strong winds generating large waves and some surge may be enough to cause some localised coastal flooding.

"The current forecast conditions, associated with storm Ciara, could result in wave overtopping of sea defences and sea spray in exposed coastal locations.

"People are advised to stay away from risk areas and take care next to the coast."
