'Don't travel' warnings issued as Storm Ciara hits

Published by the Pirate FM News Team at 7:02am 9th February 2020. (Updated at 4:34pm 9th February 2020)

'Don't travel' warnings have been issued as Storm Ciara sweeps into Cornwall.

The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for gales of up to 80mph.

Forecasters say the strong winds will also be accompanied by heavy rain in some areas.

Both Highways England and emergency services have issued a 'Severe Weather Alert' for drivers.

Disruption is already hitting the Duchy, with one lane on the Tamar Bridge closed to vulnerable vehicles.

There are cancellations on the trains between Penzance and Bristol, as huge waves are forecast.

All sailings on the St Mawes passenger ferries have been cancelled as well.

"Road users who are wishing to use any part of the Highways England Network across the country are being advised to check the weather forecast and road conditions before they travel today (Sunday 9th February) as strong winds are forecast until at least 9pm.

"Highways England is working closely with the Met Office in monitoring the weather conditions.

"As a result of the forecast we have issued a Severe Weather Alert for gales across the entire Highways England Network, covering all regions.

"The severe weather warning will be in affect from 8am on 09/02/2020 until 9pm on 09/02/2020.

"Road users are advised to take extra care when travelling, to allow plenty of extra time to complete your journey and to consider whether your journey is necessary before setting out, by first checking the latest forecast and road conditions.

"Up-to-date information on England's motorways and major trunk roads is available on the Traffic England website or by calling our 24/7 Customer Contact Centre on 0300 123 5000".
