BIG gorse fire in Cornwall fanned by strong winds

Firefighters have rushed to the scene of a huge gorse fire at a Cornish nature reserve.

The blaze broke out at Rosenannon Downs just after 9pm on Saturday night.

The flames had spread over 2km and were being fanned by strong winds.

Crews from Wadebridge had to call in back-up from Padstow, St Columb, St Dennis and Lostwithiel.

"We are currently in attendance at large gorse fire on Rosenannon Downs. 

"There are three major pumping appliances, five 4x4 light pumps as well as a flexi-duty officer in attendance. 

"The fire is over a 2km front being fanned by high winds".

"Firefighters from Wadebridge were mobilised to a gorse fire at Rosenannon Downs this evening.

"The crew discovered the fire was spread over two fronts and was being fanned by strong winds. 

"Extra assistance was requested from Padstow Community Fire Station, St Columb Community Fire Station, St Dennis Community Fire Station and Lostwithiel Community Fire Station.

"The fire was extinguished using beaters".
