A house has been struck by lightning near St Austell.

Cornwall is being battered by gales and downpours for a second day in the wake of Storm Ciara.

Hail and thunderstorms have also been sweeping across the Duchy with reports of lightning strikes in the Par area.

Firefighters say that one house was struck but a number of properties have been affected.

A man was inside the house on Helleur Close at the time but luckily was not seriously injured.

Photos on social media show that damage has been caused to the roof of the property.

"I was in the conservatory watching hailstones and lightening hit the house behind me. Very scary. Phones and internet off."

Trevor Gilmore, neighbour

Other residents have reported their houses 'shaking' and also a 'loud bang' and they have been left without internet.

“We had a lightning strike at about 1.30pm. It hit one house, maybe the aerial, and the strike has affected number of properties due to the force through the electric system for most of the properties.

"The male occupant was inside at the time and his partner was at work. Fortunately no one was seriously injured.”

Lee Griffin, group manager at Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service

An aerial platform ladder is coming from Truro so firefighters can start removing the lose tiles, weather permitting.

Firefighters are expected to remain at the scene for several hours.

Hundreds of homes across Cornwall were also left without power because of the wild weather.

"Plymouth - Penzance and Par - Newquay

"You may use your ticket on First Kernow buses on route T1, T2 27, U1, U2, 21, 25, 87, 90, 92 93.
