£65k cash boost for major revamp of Penzance Prom

Published by the Pirate FM News Team at 10:21am 11th February 2020.

A big cash boost has been announced, to go towards a major revamp of Penzance Prom.

The town council has agreed to pump in £65,000 for stuff like new flagpoles, benches and pebble seats.
The £1.4m scheme to do up Cornwall's only Victorian promenade, is being led by Cornwall Council.

The work is due to be completed ahead of the Tour of Britain event in September, after 'considerable storm damage in recent years'.

"The Promenade is one of the jewels in Penzance's crown.

"We are delighted that this much needed restoration is finally taking place so residents and visitors can enjoy it for years to come."

"The decision to choose Penzance to host the "Grand Depart" of the Tour of Britain cycle race means the eyes of the world will be on our town on September 6th and we want to play our part in making sure that the Promenade looks its very best".

Mayor and Councillor, Nicole Broadhurst

Penzance Council has been working with the town's BID, Chamber of Commerce, local businesses and residents, with work on the resurfacing scheme well underway.

"Penzance promenade has suffered considerable storm damage over recent years and we're all working to restore it to its former glory.

"We're committed to improving the resilience and condition of Cornwall's only Victorian promenade, which is why we are carrying out major works to repair the original structure and improve the surface.

"This scheme is also a key part of our ambition to provide a Mount's Bay trail - a high quality walking and cycling route around Mounts Bay from Mousehole to Marazion.

"During a series of community engagement events last year, residents told us that some of their favourite elements of the scheme were the design features, such as the pebble seating.

"Penzance Council's investment in this aspect of the scheme will ensure the promenade has high quality furniture that residents want and visitors will enjoy".

Councillor Geoff Brown

The Tour of Britain is the UK's premier road cycling event and the most prestigious race in Britain and sees some of the world's best cyclists competing against each other.

News that the first stage of the 2020 competition will be in Cornwall, with Penzance hosting the formal launch event was revealed last year.

Since then Penzance Council has been working with the race organisers and Cornwall Council to develop a programme of events and activities to mark the event in the town.

"The last time Cornwall was chosen to launch a major sports event - the Olympic Torch Relay - images of Land's End and St Michael's Mount were broadcast around the world, helping to enhance our profile and generating money for our local economy.

"This event will see riders cycling across our Promenade and the Harbour Front through Market Jew Street and out towards St Just where the official start will take place.

"We are working closely with the town's BID and Regeneration Partnership to develop plans to enable our local community to share in this exciting event and look forward to seeing our new flagpoles proudly displaying new colourful flags and residents and visitors making good use of the new benches we are funding".
