ANOTHER named storm is set to batter Cornwall

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 10:58am 11th February 2020. (Updated at 12:10pm 11th February 2020)

ANOTHER named storm is heading towards Cornwall just days after we were battered by Storm Ciara.

Now Storm Dennis is set to bring gales of up to 70mph and heavy rain on Saturday.

The Met Office has issued a 12-hour yellow weather warning for wind from midday through until midnight.

Large waves could cause a 'danger to life' with the chance of beach material being thrown onto roads and properties along with flying debris.

Travel problems and power cuts are being forecast too - just days after trees were downed and homes were damaged after being struck by lightning.

Experts say Dennis is not expected to be as extreme as Ciara but could still bring widespread disruption across the country.

A second warning for rain has now been issued too - covering 24 hours over the weekend.

What to expect:

  • There is a small chance of injuries and danger to life from flying debris
  • There is a slight chance of some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs
  • There is a small chance of longer journey times or cancellations as road, rail, air and ferry services are affected
  • There is a small chance that some roads and bridges could close
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
  • There is a small chance that injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties

"Very strong winds in association with Storm Dennis are expected on Saturday across many parts of England and Wales.

"Gusts of 50 mph are expected widely inland, with around 60 mph in places.

"Around the coasts, especially in the west and south, gusts of 60-70 mph are likely. This will be accompanied by heavy rain at times."
