Storm Dennis triggers SECOND warning for Cornwall

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 12:05pm 11th February 2020. (Updated at 12:06pm 11th February 2020)

Storm Dennis has sparked a second 24-hour weather warning for Cornwall.

A yellow weather warning for wind was issued by the Met Office - now one for rain has gone out too.

Both are in force for the weekend as the second named storm in a week batters the Duchy.

Gales could reach up to 70mph along the coast and could whip up big waves.

Forecasters say flying debris could cause a danger to life and widespread travel disruption is expected too.

The heavy rainfall is expected to bring flooding to homes, businesses and roads along with difficult driving conditions.

70mm of rain could fall in the west, particularly areas which are already wet from the recent wild weather.

When will Storm Dennis hit?

The warning for wind is in force for 12 hours from midday through until midnight on Saturday

The warning for rain is in force for 24 hours from midday on Saturday through until midday on Sunday.

What to expect from the rain:

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings
  • There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life
  • Where flooding occurs, there is a slight chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services
  • Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads
  • There is a slight chance of power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses

"Heavy rain associated with Storm Dennis is expected to move east across England and Wales on Saturday and Sunday.

"Accumulations of 15 to 30 mm are expected widely, with 50 to 70mm across parts of the higher ground in the west.

"This rain is expected to fall across areas already wet from recent rainfall."
