Flood alerts for Cornwall between storms

Flood alerts for Cornwall between storms

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 1:22pm 11th February 2020. (Updated at 9:22am 12th February 2020)

Further flood alerts have been issued for Cornwall in the wake of Storm Ciara.

The Environment Agency says flooding is possible on Wednesday morning as the sea remains rough and there could be overtopping.

People are being advised to avoid the at-risk areas of the coast and be prepared for more alerts on Thursday.

Alerts have been issued for:

  • South Cornwall Coast from Lizard Point to Gribbin Head excluding Truro City
  • South Cornwall Coast from Lands End to Lizard Point

It means flooding is possible for the tidal rivers Helford and Fal, Penryn, Flushing, St Mawes, Portscatho, Portloe, Portholland, Mevagissey and Par, as well as Mousehole, Newlyn, Penzance, Longrock, Marazion, and Praa Sands.

"Flooding is possible over the morning tide on Wednesday the 12th of February.

"The sea remains rough following the passage of Storm Ciara resulting in wave overtopping of sea defences and sea spray in exposed coastal locations.

"Times of high water will vary along the coast.

"A further low pressure is forecast to cross the area from Wednesday evening. This is anticipated to bring a further surge in sea levels and large waves.

"As a result, it is likely that additional flood alerts or flood warnings will be issued for the high tide on Thursday morning, the 13th of February.

"People are advised to stay away from risk areas and take care next to the coast."

It comes as Storm Dennis is named by the Met Office - set to bring more gales and torrential downpours across the weekend.

The double weather warning for wind and rain is forecast to cause large waves, travel disruption, flying debris and more flooding too.
