Cornish MP appointed as Secretary of State

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 5:19pm 13th February 2020. (Updated at 5:21pm 13th February 2020)

The MP for Camborne and Redruth has been given a top job in Boris Johnson's cabinet.

George Eustice has been appointed as Secretary of State for Defra.

He has served in the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs since Boris became prime minister.

The 48-year-old Cornish MP also served under ex-prime minister David Cameron - and also Theresa May - before resigning over her Brexit strategy.

But a power struggle at the heart of the Conservative government has also resulted in the chancellor quitting.

Sajid Javid refused to sack his senior advisors and merge with a team of aides from Number Ten. So he told the Prime Minister he was off.

He has now been replaced by Rishi Sunak.

Meantime Andrea Leadsom, Theresa Villiers and Julian Smith have been relieved of their duties as business, environment and Northern Ireland secretaries.

Attorney general Geoffrey Cox has gone too - along with Esther McVey, Chris Skidmore, Nusrat Ghani and George Freeman

It has been revealed that Boris Johnson's reshuffle is likely to have cost taxpayers more than £100,000 in "golden goodbyes" to sacked ministers.

Under legislation introduced in 1991, ministers forced out of office are entitled to a quarter of their yearly ministerial salary if they are under the age of 65.

The prime minister sacked eight ministers in the reshuffle on Thursday, with the group now entitled to payouts worth thousands of pounds.

Top of the list is Geoffrey Cox, who was earning a salary of £94,450 in his role as attorney general.

His sacking means he is now entitled to a sum of £23,612.

The eight departing ministers' entitlements all add up to £103,595.
