'Don't travel' warnings issued as Storm Dennis hits

Published by the Pirate FM News Team at 9:16am 15th February 2020. (Updated at 9:54am 15th February 2020)

'Don't travel' warnings have been issued as Storm Dennis sweeps into Cornwall.

The Met Office has issued a double weather warning for gales of up to 70mph and heavy rain.

Forecasters say up to 80mm could fall in some parts of the south-west.

Both Highways England and Devon and Cornwall Police have issued a 'Severe Weather Alert' for drivers.

Disruption is already hitting the Duchy and Devon, with trees down on the A30 and near Fowey.

Flights from Land's End to the Isles of Scilly are on hold, with cancellations at Bristol Airport too.

Tamar Crossings has also tweeted to warn drivers to expect restrictions on the Tamar Bridge.

Inspector Si Jenkinson from Devon and Cornwall Police posted the following warning on social media.

"Weather front movement for the weekend across Devon and Cornwall.

"Please heed the warnings, this will present very hazardous driving conditions.

"Officers are already dealing with a number of collisions which affect our ability to meet other calls for service.

He added: "It looks like the really heavy rain is due around midday, continuing into late Sunday.

"Please don't drive unless essential, it isn’t worth the risks".

Inspector Si Jenkinson

"We're encouraging drivers to check the latest weather and travel conditions before setting off on journeys and consider if their journey is necessary and can be delayed until conditions improve. If you do intend to travel, then plan your journey and take extra care, allowing more time for your journey.

“In heavy rain, drivers should keep well back from the vehicle in front, gradually ease off the accelerator if the steering becomes unresponsive, and slow down if the rain and spray from vehicles makes it difficult to see and be seen.

“In high winds, there's a particular risk to lorries, caravans and motorbikes so we’d advise drivers of these vehicles to slow down.

“Drivers of other vehicles should be aware of sudden gusts of wind which can affect handling and braking, and give high-sided vehicles, caravans, and motorbikes plenty of space. In the event of persistent high winds we may need to close bridges to traffic for a period, so please be alert for warnings of closures and follow signed diversion routes".
