NEW severe weather warning out for Cornwall

Published by Emma Carton at 10:19am 16th February 2020. (Updated at 2:33pm 16th February 2020)

The Met Office has issued another severe weather warning as Storm Dennis continues to batter Cornwall.

A new yellow alert for strong winds has been extended to cover the Duchy, lasting into Monday.

Forecasters say gusts of around 60mph could whip up huge waves and spark more travel disruption.

It comes alongside those warnings for torrential rain, which will remain in force until 9pm on Sunday evening.

What can we expect?

The Met Office says Storm Dennis will bring some very strong winds and transport disruption during Sunday and into Monday morning.

The extended yellow weather warning will be in force from 10am on Sunday until 11am on Monday.

Forecasters say we can expect:

  • Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely
  • Probably some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer
  • Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely
  • Some short term loss of power and other services is possible
  • It's likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities affected by spray and/or large waves

What is the full forecast?

"Some very strong winds are likely in association with Storm Dennis. Gusts of 50-60mph are likely quite widely within the warning area for much of the period.

"Gusts of 70mph are likely at times, more especially across western Scotland on Sunday afternoon and evening, as well as in association with heavy showers elsewhere.

"A separate swathe of 70-75mph gusts probably crossing the far north of Scotland and Orkney for a time early on Monday".
