LISTEN: Man from Plymouth calls 999 over cat

Published by Emma Carton at 8:11am 28th February 2020. (Updated at 2:40pm 28th February 2020)

A man from Plymouth has rang 999 because his girlfriend's cat had fallen down two flights of stairs.

South Western Ambulance Service has released the recording as a warning.

Figures show the control centre deals with around 2,500 inappropriate shouts every day.

The call has to be heard to be believed!

This is the moment a man from Plymouth called 999 about a cat having fallen down the stairs.

Worryingly, this is not the only inappropriate call made recently.

Others include a woman wanting the number for a pharmacy and a man blocked in by an ambulance on an emergency shout!

In a statement given to ITV News Westcountry, paramedics have urged people NOT to phone unless it is an emergency.

"The 999 service should only be used for genuine, time-critical and life-threatening situations when emergency care really could be the difference between human life and death.

"Inappropriate use of the 999 service puts additional pressure on our limited resources, and may mean we cannot reach those people who are most in need of our care".
