Coronavirus: String of schools in Devon are closed

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 1:54pm 2nd March 2020. (Updated at 4:26pm 2nd March 2020)

A string of schools in Devon have closed on the day the government chairs a crisis meeting over coronavirus.

Four have posted on their websites that they are closed on Monday 2nd March and updates will be posted shortly.

These are Churston Ferrers Grammar School in Brixham, Collaton St Mary in Paignton, Galmpton Primary School in Brixham, and Brixham Church of England Primary School and Pre-School.

Bosses say it is as a 'precautionary measure' and say that there is no immediate risk to children or families.

"Being that our Trust always put the well-being of our pupils first, we took the precautionary measure to close the schools whilst waiting further information in relation to Churston Grammar's decision to close.

"Our schools have close links with Churston through siblings and staff members and once we are satisfied that there is no immediate risk to our children and families, we will re-open the school.

"We hope that this will be tomorrow."

It is understood that a fifth school has also shut for the day.

Pirate FM has also asked Devon County Council, NHS, Public Health England and Torbay Council for statements, and is waiting to hear back.

Devon County Council has posted the following advice in relation to coronavirus on its website:

"We understand that our residents and visitors may have concerns about coronavirus. We would like to reassure you that the government and NHS are well prepared to deal with this virus.

"The council is monitoring the situation closely and coordinating with Public Health England. We are taking all possible steps to keep you safe.

"Visit the NHS website for the latest information and advice and the current situation in the UK or you can follow Public Health England’s Facebook page or Twitter feed for the latest updates, information and advice."

It comes after two colleges in Cornwall issued advice about coronavirus to students returning from half-term skiing trips.

They say only those who have travelled to areas north of Pisa and who are showing symptoms should self-isolate.

Officials say they are following the current advice from WHO and Public Health England and monitoring the situation.

Two schools in the Duchy have told some staff and students to self isolate for 14 days.

Newquay Tretherras and Penair in Truro decoded to take action as a precaution.
