Pirate FM launches 'Tonne of Tins' for Cornwall's foodbanks

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 4:52pm 2nd March 2020. (Updated at 5:42pm 2nd March 2020)

Pirate FM is launching its Tonne of Tins campaign for the second year running to help some of Cornwall's most vulnerable people.

The campaign will support struggling families in the Duchy from Saltash to St Ives by collecting donations for local foodbanks.

We are humbly asking the amazing people of Kernow to pop a couple of extra tins in the shopping basket across the next month.

Last year we aimed to raise one tonne in a month and absolutely smashed our target - raising a massive 20 tonnes!

Now we are hoping to do the same again.

Scroll down to find a list of what our foodbanks desperately need.

Why are we doing this?

Put simply, more and more locals are using foodbanks, from the Lizard to Launceston and St Ives to Saltash.

Foodbanks like Camborne, Pool and Redruth say just one or two tins can make a massive difference.

Manager Don Gardner says on average the centre is handing out 16,000 meals a month!

"The numbers are going up every week and it's just frightening.

"It is horrendous when you think about the problems that people must be in to come to the foodbank.

"I'll admit it, I've cried."

How can I get involved?

'Tonne of Tins' will be running across the whole of March 2020.

You can bring your donations to the Pirate FM studios on Wilson Way, Redruth, Smart Automotive at Winnard's Perch, or Darcroft Garage in Bodmin.

That is where our teams will be on hand to weigh your tins until we reach or exceed our total.

We will update the website if more drop off stations become available.

What are the foodbanks looking for?

The foodbanks are mostly looking for donations of tinned food, but here is a list other items that we will also accept:

  • Food: Cereal, Soup, Pasta, Rice, pasta sauce, Lentils, Tinned meat, Tinned vegetables, Tea/coffee, Tinned fruit, UHT milk, Fruit juice
  • Baby Supplies: nappies, baby wipes and baby food.
  • Toiletries: deodorant, toilet paper, shower gel, shaving gel, shampoo, soap, toothbrushes, tooth paste, hand wipes
