Coronavirus: First case confirmed in Cornwall

Published by the Pirate FM News Team at 4:21pm 5th March 2020. (Updated at 2:10pm 6th March 2020)

We have had official confirmation of the first case of coronavirus in Cornwall.

Cornwall Council and Public Health England have released a joint statement.

They say the case is a resident in the county who became infected in northern Italy.

No further details about where in Cornwall they are from or their age have yet been released.

It comes as the total number of confirmed cases across the UK rises to 116.

Public Health England is contacting people who had close contact with one of the latest confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Close contacts will be given health advice about symptoms and emergency contact details to use if they become unwell in the 14 days after contact with the confirmed case.

Officials say this 'tried and tested method will ensure we are able to minimise any risk to them and the wider public'.

"I'd like to reassure people that the risk to the general public remains low and Cornwall Council is working with health colleagues to do everything we can to stop the virus spreading and ensure the people of Cornwall are protected.

"If you have not been contacted by Public Health England as a close contact of the confirmed case you do not need to take any action at this time.

"Good hygiene is the best prevention and there are some simple steps you can take to protect you and your family by washing your hands regularly and thoroughly and if you cough, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue.

"If you have recently been to one of the affected areas and are feeling unwell, you should use the NHS 111 online coronavirus service or call NHS 111 for further advice straight away - please don't go to your doctor or a hospital. There's lots of advice on how people can protect themselves online at www.nhs.uk/coronavirus "

Steve Brown, Cornwall Council's Deputy Director of Public Health

It comes after two cases were confirmed in Devon earlier this week.

Public Health England says both patients are from the south Devon area and became infected whilst in northern Italy.

One is a pupil from Churston Ferrers Grammar in Brixham. Staff say they are getting support and advice from health officials.

Coronavirus: Your Questions Answered

What is coronavirus?

When you hear about coronavirus on the news, it's likely they are talking about COVID-19.

COVID-19 is a new illness that can affect your lungs and airways.

What are the symptoms of coronavirus?

Advice on the NHS website says the symptoms of coronavirus are the following:

  • A cough
  • A high temperature
  • Shortness of breath
  • However, the above symptoms do not necessarily mean you have the illness.

The symptoms are similar to other illnesses that are much more common, such as cold and flu.

How is coronavirus spread and how can I stop that?

The NHS says it is not yet known exactly how coronavirus is spread from person to person, mainly down to the fact of how new it is.

However, viruses of a similar nature are ofter spread via small droplets from coughing.

NHS advice says: "It's very unlikely it can be spread through things like packages or food.

"Viruses like coronavirus cannot live outside the body for very long".
