Flood alerts issued across Cornwall

Published by the Pirate FM News Team at 11:33am 9th March 2020. (Updated at 7:32am 10th March 2020)

The Environment Agency has issued flood alerts along coastal areas of Cornwall for Tuesday morning.

High spring tides could cause overtopping and coastal flooding across Cornwall's coast and rivers.

Alerts are currently in force for:

  • The Rumps to Hartland Point excluding Bude

Flooding is also possible for The Rumps to Hartland Point including Port Quinn, Port Isaac, Port Gaverne, Flexbury, Widmouth Bay, Trebarwith Strand and Boscastle.

  • Chapel Porth to The Rumps excluding the tidal River Camel

It is possible Chapel Porth to The Rumps including Trevellas, Perranporth, Newquay, Mawgan Porth, Porth and Polzeath, excluding the tidal River Camel, could be affected.

  • North Cornwall Coast from Lands End to Chapel Porth

Flooding possible for Lands End to Chapel Porth including Sennen, St Ives, Carbis Bay, Lelant, Portreath and Porthtowan.

  • Tidal River Camel excluding Wadebridge and Chapel Amble

There will be possible flooding for low lying areas on the tidal River Camel including Padstow, Rock, Sladesbridge and the A389.

Flooding is possible for all high tides from the morning of Tuesday 10th March until the evening high tide on Thursday 12th March.  High water at Ilfracombe on Tuesday is 06:22 and 18:48, Wednesday at 07:06 and 19:30 and Thursday at 07:48 and 20:11.

Times of high water will vary along the coast.

Tide levels are now rising towards spring tides which peak on Wednesday 11th March. High tide levels and some surge may cause localised coastal flooding. The current forecast conditions could result in wave overtopping of sea defences and sea spray in exposed coastal locations.

Expect tides to be around 300mm higher than predicted due to weather conditions.

People are advised to stay away from risk areas and take care next to the coast.
