Dog finds forever home after 1,300 days in Cornish rescue centre

A little dog has finally found his forever home after having spent over 1,300 days in a rescue centre in Cornwall.

Smithy, an eight-year-old Jack Russel, has been at the National Animal Welfare Trust in Hayle for the past four years.

Having not had the best start in life, Smithy's complicated history meant that he needed a very special home.

The team have been working hard to find him a new family ever since he first arrived at the centre.

Several social media campaigns reached more than 90,000 people over the years but the right person for him never seemed to come along.

But Smithy's luck changed when Ali, who has been volunteering with the charity for many years, realised she could provide him with the perfect forever home.

Having lost her dog last year, Ali decided she was finally ready to welcome a new special dog into her heart.

Now he has finally found his forever home thanks to a volunteer at the charity

"This weekend will be a bittersweet moment for the team and volunteers at the centre, who have built up a very strong bond with Smithy.

"It will be a moment they will not quickly forget and reinforces the charity motto of 'We Never Stop Caring.'

"At no point did the team of staff and volunteers give up hope that one day the right home would come along for Smithy. Finally, the hard work and dedication has paid off."
