Police and Crime Commissioner elections postposed in Cornwall

Police and Crime Commissioner elections postposed in Cornwall

Published by the Pirate FM News Team at 6:01am 18th March 2020.

The upcoming election to appoint the Police and Crime Commissioner for Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly have been postponed because of the coronavirus outbreak.

The current commissioner, Alison Hernandez, will remain in the post for an additional year after elections were due to take place this May.

The Cabinet Office announced last Friday (13th March) that it was bringing forward legislation to postpone council, mayoral, and PCC elections until May 2021.

Alison said she intended to continue working with police and partners to achieve the aims of the Police and Crime Plan.

“The Covid-19 virus is a crisis which requires an immediate response to protect communities. I understand the course of action taken by the Government and will work to ensure that my office and the police force make every effort to ensure communities are kept as safe as is possible in what will be a difficult time for many,” she said.

“My office will be taking action to offer additional advice to those members of our community who might be left even more vulnerable by a period of imposed isolation. I would remind victims of crime that our Victim Care Network can provide emotional and practical help to victims of crime, whether or not those crimes have been reported to police.”
