Number of coronavirus cases in Cornwall rises to eight

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Cornwall has risen to eight.

That is according to the latest data from Public Health England. But there is no updated statement from Cornwall Council yet.

It has also been confirmed that two Covid-19 patients are currently being treated at Treliske and are in isolation.

RCHT bosses say they are well equipped to deal with the situation and the hospital is "running as normal".

Across the UK there are over over 1,500 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 55 people have died.

It comes as the government says "drastic" measures are now needed to fight the spread of Covid-19.

The Prime Minister says it is about to spread ever more rapidly. Boris Johnson is advising people to stay at home, avoid public transport, and not to go to pubs, bars or restaurants.

The UK's pub industry is warning it could be lost within days without government action.

London's theatres have shut completely for the first time since the plague.

Elsewhere a travel ban on flying to the US from the UK comes into effect this morning. And Europe's borders will close at lunchtime for 30 days.

Airlines across the world are in turmoil because of the pandemic and people are being advised to only make essential journeys.

What are the symptoms of coronavirus?

People should stay at home for seven days if they have either:

  • A high temperature
  • A new continuous cough

"Do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital," the NHS website adds. "You do not need to contact 111 to tell them you're staying at home."

When should I call 111?

The NHS is asking people to use its 111 online service if:

  • You cannot cope with your symptoms at home
  • Your condition gets worse
  • Your symptoms do not get better after seven days
  • People are asked to phone 111 only if they cannot get help online.

You can find more information from the NHS here.
