Helston's Flora Day has been cancelled because of the coronavirus outbreak.

Thousands of people descend on the town each year for the ancient tradition, which welcomes in the spring.

The Helston Flora Day Stewards have taken the decision to cancel the event for 2020.

They say the decision has not been taken lightly and with a "heavy heart".

Organisers added that a great deal of time and planning has gone into the event but they feel strongly that the health, safety, and wellbeing of all the dancers, Hal an Tow, Band, and the general public must be their top priority.

"The government has stated that the coronavirus outbreak has not yet peaked and has taken the steps to discourage large-scale events and avoid all non-essential contact".

Stewards Chairman, John Eddy

“It is with the government guidance that we take this decision with a heavy heart, all those invited to take part this year will have their invitations honored in 2021”.

Hon Secretary, Nick Wills

What do we know about Flora Day?

"It is a Spring festival to celebrate the end of winter and mark the arrival of the new vitality and fertility with the trees and flowers bursting into life.

"The houses and shops of the town are decorated with greenery and floral arrangements to express the spirit of renewal.

"When the big bass drum strikes the first beat of the dance at seven in the morning, the spirit of the day is stirred and the celebrations commence.

"Some eighty couples dance through the streets, entering selected houses and shops to drive out the darkness of winter and bring in the light of spring.

"The colourful Pageant, known as Hal an Tow, tells the history of Helston with the participating characters singing about the challenge of the Spanish Armada, the English patron saint, St. George and the fight between St Michael and the devil".
