Communities in Cornwall come together amid coronavirus outbreak

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 11:30am 17th March 2020.

Local communities across Cornwall are coming together to help those affected by the coronavirus outbreak.

Shops and groups are offering support to the elderly, those who are self-isolating and people who are most at risk.

Helston is gearing up to implement a Community Emergency Plan. Volunteers will help those who are vulnerable or self-isolating.

"With the expanding Coronavirus situation Helston Town Council is gearing up to implement the Community Emergency plan.

"To support the local community emergency plan that we will provide, more volunteers are needed! The more volunteers we have the stronger we are as a community.

"We envisage volunteers will be able to carry out activities for those self isolating or having difficulties such as: picking up shopping, posting mail, collecting urgent supplies, giving a regular friendly phone call and or check.

"All are welcome, recognising Coronavirus guidance we would particularly like to encourage those not in the ‘high risk’ groups.

Your first step is to contact Helston Town Council using any of the following:
Telephone: 01326 572063
Email: townclerk@helston-tc.gov.uk (please use “Volunteer” in subject title)
In Person: Call into HTC Offices in the Guildhall.

"Remember, together as a community we can help each other."

Iceland in Camborne is offering an allocated time slot for elderly customers to shop.

It will be open on Wednesday to allow elderly and vulnerable customers and those with disabilities to shop between 8am-10am.

And the post office in Bude is offering home services to those who need it, inclusing vulnerable customers.

It is to help others in what it calls "a period of uncertainty".

"In this period of uncertainty with this virus if any of our older customers are worried about coming out to the post office or need anything at all please don’t hesitate to ring us or contact us in the post office.

"We will come to you and provide a home service/collection/delivery or do what ever we can.

"Letters parcels, home shopping returns, bill payments, electric/ gas top ups.

"These are unprecedented times we must think, listen and respond accordingly.

"And behave sensibly in traditional British fashion."
