The Merlin MS Centre near St Austell is closing until further notice because of the coronavirus outbreak.

It is the only purpose built facility in Cornwall that provides a 'comprehensive range of subsidised and affordable therapies' for those whose lives are affected by Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

The services the charity provides are also available to those with other neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s, Stroke, ME Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).

But users at the centre are vulnerable due to their health or age and have been advised to self-isolate for 12 weeks.

Bosses say it is likely that it will be shut for a minimum of three months.

The centre will still be providing telephone and online contact to users along with delivery of essential shopping and medicines.

"With the advice from Government and Scientific experts following the COBRA meeting yesterday afternoon, regrettably the Merlin MS Centre will close from Wednesday March 18th until further notice.

"As our service users are vulnerable due to their health conditions and/or age, the official advice is for them to self-isolate for 12 weeks and therefore it is likely the closure period will be for a minimum of three months.

"All the staff at Merlin are committed to supporting its service users at this difficult time.

"Our intention is to provide regular telephone and online contact; delivery of essential shopping, medicines etc where they have no family or other support and through live streaming of the exercise sessions to help people maintain health and well-being, providing the charity can be funded for such activity."
