A man from Cornwall has launched a petition calling for all tourist travel across the UK to be suspended.

It comes after reports of cars full of suitcases and with roof boxes flocking to the Duchy over the weekend.

It is believed that people have been travelling to the Duchy to self-isolate amid the coronavirus pandemic.

A string of holiday parks have already announced closures, including the likes of Parkdean Resorts and all UK Caravan and Motorhome Club sites.

But some companies have still been advertising, which has caused deep concern from locals.

It comes after officials in Cornwall issued an appeal, urging tourists to 'stay away'.

The MP for St Austell and Newquay, Steve Double, has also issued a stark warning, saying people travelling to the Duchy are putting people's lives at risk.

The current government advice is to avoid all but essential travel. This means people should avoid visiting holiday or second homes too.

Now Ben Harvey is urging officials to take action and suspend tourist travel across the country "before it's too late".

His online petition has already been signed by more than 3,500 people in just a few days.

You can find the petition here.

The petition reads: "The Government as of tonight, Friday 20th of March 2020. Is making Restaurants, Pubs, Clubs, Theatres, Gyms and leisure centres close. I strongly agree with this. As long as the government gives the companies affected full support during these hard Financial Times.

"What I don’t understand is, We’re not allowed to go to our local Pub, Gym, leisure centre etc but we are allowed to travel from one end of the country to the other. How can this be right.

"I live in Cornwall. With Easter fast approaching people are going to be flooding to the area for the holidays.

"My local hospital is the biggest in Cornwall. It only has 15 critical care beds. There’s roughly 570,000 people living in Cornwall at present. If 20% of this population became critical with Covid-19. This could potently mean 115,000 critical care beds would be needed. My local hospital has a total of  760 bed.

"I know all of these people wouldn’t be critical with Covid-19 at the same time. But these sums are worrying. If people traveled to this area. The number of hospital beds needed could be pushed up dramatically.

"I would plee with our government to suspend the tourist travel in our country the UK before its to late. The only way I can see this happening,  unfortunately, is to temporarily close down the tourist industry in this country. I fear people may temporarily lose there jobs. This is a selfish thing to say.  But People losing there jobs is far better then people losing there lives.

"Help us look out for our local NHS and adult social care staff. These people have hard times ahead of them. They are going to see things far worse then we can imagine.

"Please stay within your local area. To help prevent the spread of Covid-19."
