Free counselling services for Cornish residents

Free counselling services for Cornish residents

Published by the Pirate FM News Team at 7:10am 25th March 2020.

Residents in Cornwall will have access to free phone and online support for those struggling to cope with the Covid-19 outbreak.

Counselling for Social Change (CSC), is proving 30-minute appointments with trained counsellors to provide emotional support during a time that can be frightening for some.

"Many of us are self-isolating, all of us should be social distancing. We are grieving. Not just for people dying, but for our lives, our plans and our futures. In the space of days, our lives have changed immeasurably.

"Undoubtedly this crisis will have an impact on all our mental health."

CSC Spokesperson

CSC normally offers long-term counselling, however, it wants to reach as many people as possible and give them the opportunity of being able to reach out and access emotional support.

"This initiative has been set up to provide critical help for people experiencing emotional difficulty surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic, which is all of us.

"This is a safe space to share feelings confidentially with an impartial and supportive trained counsellor. There is sometimes stigma around talking therapies, and I urge people to step beyond that and to use this service to support themselves, so they can be as well emotionally as possible during a time when certainty is unavailable for us all."

Lucy Allen, a trustee for CSC

The sessions can be booked online here. CSC says it's not taking block bookings and is requesting that only one session is booked at a time so people can access this service.

The aim, if capacity is reached, is to have sessions available from 9am-9pm daily.

To begin with, this service will be made available to anyone living in Cornwall. But it may expand to other areas or prioritise groups of people, such as NHS workers or vulnerable people depending on demand.
