Tamar Bridge tolls suspended to help prevent Covid-19 spread

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 6:45am 25th March 2020.

Tolls on the Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry are being temporarily suspended in a bid to help prevent the spread of coronavirus.

It will initially be for a three-week period, in light of the latest government restrictions.

Officials say the decision has been made to help protect bridge and ferry staff, key workers and those travelling for essential reasons.

All other drivers should avoid non-essential travel in line with the latest advice from the Prime Minister.

"Suspending tolling will effectively eliminate the need for personal contact between Tamar Crossings staff and our customers and will add to service resilience by allowing reallocation of some cross-trained staff.

"We will review the position as the situation develops and in the light of any further Government advice."

How does the toll suspension work?

The suspension is now in force and will affect all drivers.

TamarTag account fees will also be suspended with effect from midnight, and account holders will only be charged pro-rata for the March period.

TamarTag users may find that their tags beep in the normal manner but their account will not be charged.

At the bridge, drivers are requested to observe overhead signals and slowly pass through open booth lanes with care as there may occasionally be bridge staff crossing behind the toll booths.

Drivers entering an open lane will receive a green traffic light and the barrier will be locked in the upright position. There will also be a number of signs stating “Please drive slowly through the lanes”.
