Warning after beach walkers spotted in Cornwall amid UK lockdown

Published by the Pirate FM News Team at 11:00am 28th March 2020.

A word of warning has been issued to Cornish residents who have been spotted on the county's coastlines and beaches in the last few days.

HM Coastguard says it has received a number of calls reporting groups of people on beaches, despite the Government implementing a UK lockdown on Monday 23rd March.

The Prime Minister called for everyone to stay at home unless it was for essential travel. He also outlined the need for people to follow the social distancing guidelines. For more information on this, visit the Government website here

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), is a frontline emergency response agency of the Department for Transport and has put out a plea to anyone who may be thinking of a trip to the coast or the beach in the coming weeks.

“The rules are very simple and can be found on the Government website. Stay at home. The risk of spreading Coronavirus is huge and while you might be okay, the person you give it to may not. And if you get into trouble and have to call 999 and ask for the Coastguard, you’re then putting frontline emergency responders at risk of COVID-19 too.

“At this time of the year, the beaches aren’t lifeguarded which is a double risk to you and our emergency responders. Help us to help you. Stay at home.”

Pete Mizen, Assistant Director for HM Coastguard
