A string of crimes have been committed across Cornwall by people with coronavirus symptoms.

Police say arrests have been made for GBH, drink driving and even violently assaulting officers.

Supt Ian Drummond-Smith tweeted to thank the officers who are keeping us safe whilst at risk of exposure.

"You’d think people with COVID symptoms would be tucked up in bed!

"Several symptomatic suspects arrested in past week for GBH, drink driving & even violently assaulting police officers.

"Our brave officers are attending these incidents, at risk of exposure, to keep us all safe."

It comes as police get new powers to help enforce the rules of the UK-wide lockdown.

Officers are patrolling roads across the Duchy making sure people are only making essential journeys in their car.

People who break the government rules could face fines.

In just 24 hours last week, over 150 cars were stop checked in the Penzance, St Ives and Hayle areas.

Police say that overall the crime rate has dropped, aside from domestic abuse cases which have risen.

Meantime, staff from Devon and Cornwall Police are being trained in other departments in a bid to maintain public safety and protect residents amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The force says it has rapidly reallocated resource from back-office functions to frontline policing to build resilience. At least 125 officers have been redeployed in the past week, with 40 instructed to handle phone calls and Sergeants given custody training.
