Message of reassurance as coronavirus death toll rises

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 6:16am 2nd April 2020.

A message of reassurance is going out as the coronavirus death toll rises in Cornwall.

Six more fatalities in the Duchy were confirmed on Wednesday, bringing the total number of Covid-19 deaths here to 16.

But bosses at Treliske say the deaths occurred over the past five days and therefore is not a sharp rise in figures.

"The announcement of deaths has first and foremost to follow time for families to be informed and then to be coordinated with national announcements, so numbers are accurately reported.

"This does mean there will sometimes be a delay between the time of death and when an announcement is made.

"Therefore, today’s figure should not be interpreted as a sharp rise in the number of cases in Cornwall over the last 24 hours, as deaths have occurred over the last five days."

Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust

RCHT says the six newly confirmed cases all involved patients who were all aged between 78 and 97 years old.

All had been cared for at Treliske and bosses say it is a "deeply upsetting and difficult time for families".

The hospital is working hard to prepare for the impact of Covid-19 and to help patients.
